Upcoming Changes to the Common Application

In a nutshell, the key changes are the following:

  • Starting the summer of 2013… Applicants will have five new essay prompts from which to choose. Want an example? Describe a place or environment where you are perfectly content.
  • The maximum word length increased from 500 to 650. If you want to exceed 650, you can’t. The computer won’t accept 651 or more.
  • There is now a minimum number of words—250—that the computer will accept.

The goal, said developers of the Common Application, is to get more detailed information to answer the question: What do you want people to know about you?

Creators of the new prompts also hope that they will invite students to share more of their personal experiences.
