Success Stories

Families who begin working with us in 9th grade benefit from a multi-year relationship with their
College Admissions Consultant and emerge with exceptional application narratives.

Alexandra*

Alexandra came to Spark Admissions when she was a bright, thoughtful ninth-grader interested in STEM—particularly computer science, which she pursued both through afterschool courses and independently, with a focus on graphic design and website building.

As a first-generation immigrant, Alexandra would be the first in her family to attend a U.S. college. Her parents sought an experienced admissions counselor to help them navigate the admissions process and ensure that Alexandra did not miss any key insights or important opportunities as she worked to put forward the strongest possible application.

We immediately recognized Alexandra’s potential in her intellectual curiosity and authentic passion for technology. However, we also knew her quiet nature could limit her ability to eventually make an impact among STEM applicants at highly competitive colleges. We would have to harness the former to help her surmount the latter.

What We Did

Alexandra’s Spark Admissions Consultant:

  • Made a four-year, comprehensive plan for Alexandra to develop her interests in STEM and computer science, including explaining how to advance in her math track at her high school, identifying math and computing competitions for her to build toward, and positioning her to attain research internships;
  • Encouraged her to build her confidence both by joining and ultimately attaining leadership in three STEM clubs, as well as furthering her love for plants with her school’s community garden—an interest that set her apart from other STEM applicants;
  • Identified and helped Alexandra secure high-level computer science internships at Harvard and MIT, where she supported faculty in novel mathematical research and was listed as a secondary author on an eventual academic publication;
  • Connected her with unique volunteer opportunities in her community related to her passion for environmental issues, where she applied her computer science skills by creating an invasive plant identification app for community use;
  • Guided her in developing exceptional college applications and additional materials highlighting her high-caliber research experience and authentic passion for environmental conservation to present her as a curious, excited learner with a clear goal.
Admissions Result

Alexandra was accepted Restrictive Early Action to the California Institute of Technology, her top-choice school.

Hannah*

We first met Hannah during her freshman year at a private high school in the greater Boston area. Hannah was a good student with a lot of friends and interests, but after her older sibling did not secure admission to his top-choice Ivy League university, her family sought out Spark to ensure that his younger sibling could set herself up for success.

We worked with Hannah throughout her four years in high school to develop a stellar academic and extracurricular resume and to craft an impressive personal narrative that would allow her to earn admission to her top-choice schools.

What We Did

Hannah’s Spark Admissions Consultant:

  • Helped her explore and articulate her areas of intellectual interest through personalized suggestions, engaging activities, and dedicated academic advising, until Hannah settled on a narrative bringing together women’s studies and public health;
  • Identified ways to hone her leadership skills through relevant extracurricular activities, particularly by joining the Red Cross Club to help run blood drives at school and starting her own Feminism Club that engaged in advocacy and community service;
  • Suggested volunteer opportunities where Hannah could pursue her passion for gender equality, ultimately leading her to develop a series of community health workshops and educational seminars in conjunction with a local women’s shelter;
  • Developed a college list reflective of Hannah’s goals, interests, and personality, focusing on schools that had interdisciplinary majors and programs where she could pursue her unique combination of interests and prepare for graduate work;
  • Guided Hannah in creating a compelling personal narrative and other application materials that showcased her genuine passion for her endeavors and her intellectual curiosity regarding the history, theory, and practice of women’s health.

Hannah was accepted Single-Choice Early Action to Yale University.
