How to Get the Most Out of Admissions Consulting

Navigating the college admissions and application process can be both exhilarating and daunting, demanding many critical decisions and considerations along the way. While the trend of hiring a college admissions consultant has become increasingly commonplace, the key to a truly transformative experience lies in understanding how to get the maximum benefit from college admissions consulting. In this blog, we discuss the strategies and insights on how to get the most out of college admissions counseling. Whether you’re a student navigating the intricacies of the college admissions process or a parent eager to support your child’s educational pursuits, this guide aims to empower you with the tools and knowledge to optimize your engagement with college admissions consultants, ensuring a personalized and effective approach to achieving your higher education goals.

5 Tips for Getting the Most Out of College Admissions Consulting

  1. Figure out what your overall goals are–do you want to get into the best school possible, the school where you will be happiest, the school that is best for a particular major? Understanding your highest order goal will help your college admissions consultant be able to best guide you. Each family and student has different values, and it is important that your college admissions counselor understands this.
  2. Start as early as possible. We cannot overstate this enough. As a trend, we see more and more families starting this process before high school begins or in their freshmen or sophomore years. There is no question that starting early helps students achieve better results. Every time we have a family who starts with us as a junior, for example, they bring their younger child to us much earlier. Time is a student’s most important asset and realizing that college planning should occur throughout high school critical. Of course, it is not too late to get effective support at any point during high school, but we constantly find that families and students appreciate the value of having more time to think through the process and, most critically, to build the resume and experiences that make a student most prepared for the college application process.
  3. Don’t be too rigid in your goals. There is not one college that will make you happy or successful in life. It is often hard for a student or even a parent to understand this, as this can be a very emotional process, but a student can find success, academically, socially and career wise by attending a wide range of schools. It’s wonderful to have a dream school, but this is the time in life to learn that being fluid in your thinking can be very helpful.
  4. Make sure that the college admissions consultant that you select will work with you regularly on developing you to make you a stronger candidate. This is one of the key things an admissions consultant should be helping you with. Some college consultants are only focused on the application process itself and top college admissions consultants provide so much more than a college list and help with the application process. The best college consultants will help you to build your interests, experiences and resume in such a way that you will both know yourself better and be more prepared for the college application process.
  5. Make sure that both the parents and students are part of the process. Of course, every family dynamic is different, and we are here to approach each student differently and how they prefer to engage. That said, we have found that it is helpful for parents and students to be involved in most cases. While the college admissions counselor will take a great deal of the burden off of the parents, it is helpful for parents to still be involved to know what is going on in the process so they can be another source of support to the student and be on the same page as the admissions consultant. This is an intensive process and we’ve seen that parents who are involved have students who are more likely to achieve their goals in this process. Of course, the college consultant will build a strong relationship with the student, as that is the primary goal of this relationship.
